Arlene's Butterfly

"I'll never forget the day my son, at age 3 1/2, answered the phone (which he'd never done before) when a contact had called. He not only told her I was in the shower, but then had a nice 'conversation' about his toys, what was showing on T.V., and what he was having for breakfast. I guess she figured out pretty quickly that I worked from home!"

A Voice of Experience

EP Motivating Force:
I needed to earn money, yet wanted more than anything to be with my child. I started selling a "brand name product" when I was pregnant with my first child, and though I didn't make a lot of money, I leraned that the possibilities were there.

EP Musings:
Phone calls to contacts while fixing snacks, changing diapers or even pushing the kids on the swing is normal for me. However, when Mommy is "working" on the computer, things get a bit more complicated. Jessica just loves to sit on my lap while I'm trying to type, and I imagine it must look pretty funny while I'm typing one-handed, juggling the phone AND trying to keep little hands from erasing everything I'm typing. Now I try to time my phone interviews when she is napping -- unfortunately she doesn't always nap in the afternoon.

EP Advice:
Remember your priorities. Sometimes I find myself getting upset with the children for interrupting my "work" and I have to remind myself that the reason I'm working at home is to be with my children!

Also, remember that working at home is work! If you don't put in the effort, you won't get the results. You need to be very organized and self-disciplined. It's very easy to wake up in the morning and decide to lounge around instead of making those phone calls.

She looks well to the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
Her husband also, and he praises her,...
Give her the product of her hands,
And let her works praise her at the gates.
