"I work as a journalist and publisher at home, but apparently my son doesn't have much appreciation for all that I do in a day. When he left for the first day of school (first grade), as he walked down the sidewalk he waved and yelled back at me, 'Bye, Mom...have a nice nap!'"

Home Career Highlights
Home Biz: The News-Sun and Funny Kids Project -- The News-Sun is a 6-day a week newspaper in Nebraska, Indiana with a circulation of about 8,000. The Funny Kids Project collects the funny things kids say for the award-winning newspaper column and the "Funny Things Kids Say" books. The project also works to spread the word about the miracle of organ/tissue donation because the illustrator has had corneal transplants in both eyes. Without them she would be blind.

Mission: My goal is to brighten people's lives and to encourage them to savor and save the funny, heart-warming and eye-opening things their kids say.

Mission Accomplished:The Midwest Book Review said my books contain the best funny kid stories since Art Linkletter, and a radio personality called me the next Erma Bombeck. I admire both of those individuals greatly, and I was thrilled to be compared to them.

Top Products/Services:
  • "The Funny Things Kids Say Will Brighten Any Day" (Volumes 1-3)
  • framed and signed prints from the books
  • free traveling library display of the illustrations from the books
  • a weekly humor column
  • an Internet site at http://www.funnykids.com

Primary Market: people, ages 8 to 88, who enjoy humor

Recent Clients: My clients are the people who buy my books, either from me personally or through bookstores or wholesalers. I have sold more than 3,000 books, mostly in NE, Indiana.

Home Career Defining Moment: I have received several state journalism awards, including two first place awards in the very competitive AP contest. I love journalism, but I also love producing my "Funny Things Kids Say" books because I think they have an important message for families across the country.

Home Career Goal: I love what I'm doing -- I just need more time and energy so I can follow through on my ideas AND attend kids sporting events AND keep the homefront running smoothly and the family fed!

A Voice of Experience

EP Motivating Force:
I enjoy being with my children.

EP Musings:
See my essay in the experts section.

EP Advice:
You can't do it alone. You need assistance with childcare, because children don't take care of themselves. Also, keep your sense of humor and remember that, in general, happy mothers have happy children!
