EP Title(s):

Education & Awards:
  • B.S. Degree in Film & Television Production, Certification as a Networking Trainer
  • U.S. Director of the Year for BNI (11/11/00)
Previous Career:
Worked in Television Broadcasting as a commercial producer, writer, editor for television commercials at a small market station in Kalispell, Montana. I also directed the nightly news (which proved to me what sheer stress was). Worked in the corporate setting as Director of Video Services for a book publisher in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, before being downsized in 1994. Then we opened our first small business producing video programs, and in order to grow our business we founded the first BNI chapter in Wisconsin in 1995. Now five years later - BNI is our business. We own the BNI franchise in the state of Wisconsin and have over 1,000 members.

Home Career Highlights
Home Biz: BNI is a business and professional networking organization whose sole purpose is to generate referral business for our members. We only allow one person per profession. Being a member of a chapter is like having a sales force of 25 people out promoting your business to the contacts they have.

Primary Market: Small business owners.

Top Services:
  • Professional networking consulting
  • Word-of-mouth referral generation

Top Clients:
  • Small business owners or sales associates serious about generating referrals
  • People who are interested in purchasing a great book about networking from the Masters of Networking
Testimonial:
  • "BNI is my single largest volume referrals source. I have about $2,500,000 in closed business from BNI. I enjoy the wonderful, fun, dynamic relationships and good friendships within the group." -- Bill Duke, Assured Mortgage, Waukesha Wisconsin Chapter

Mission Statement: The mission of Business Network Int'l (BNI) is to teach business professionals that the word-of-mouth business is more about farming than hunting; it's about the cultivation of professional relationships in a structured business environment for the mutual benefit of all. BNI was founded by Dr. Ivan Misner in 1985 as a way for businesspeople to generate referrals in a structured, professional environment. The organization, now the world's largest referral network has 1,800 chapters in 11 countries, with over 36,000 members worldwide.

Home Career Goals: One year ago we felt the need to open an office and training center due to the growth of the business. We needed to have access to a training center for our semi-annual trainings we provide to all of our leadership team members. Now one year later our needs include acquiring more space, more computer equipment, and hiring a financial/adminstrative assistant. We are anticipating a growth spurt due to the PR of my being involved as a contributing author to Masters of Networking which today hit the Wall Street Journal Best Seller's List for the fourth week in a row.

Home Career Advice: Employ a call center to take your calls. I didn't for the first three years and it was difficult to get anything appreciably done in a day. I was constantly interrupted by phone calls routing me in a different direction than I was at. Two years ago we routed all calls through a call center named American Business Solutions, and then we could focus on what we needed to get done. We received our messages via email three times each day so we could plan our callback times.

A Voice of Experience

EP Motivating Force:
We started working at home out of necessity. The very day I was downsized we took in a foster baby (we were a licensed foster home for Milwaukee County at the time.) We ended up adopting that baby (our son Timothy - who is challenged with Cerebral Palsy.) Due to the care he needed, it was important that our business was out of the home, so we could respond quickly to his needs and those of his brother Corey.

EP Musings:
One of the attributes I believe our children will have by growing up with our business, is to respect people in business, to be positive, patient, but persistent. Most recently I went with my son Corey to the bookstore to actually see Masters of Networking on a bookstore shelf. The clerk said "looks like an interesting book" which I gave a brief synopsis, and told her that I was a contributing author for the book. Then I looked over at my son Corey and (while patting him on the head) I told the clerk that my entry in the book is about my son Corey and how we adopted him through networking. Corey looked up with a sense of pride on his face, and on the way out of the store he said that he just realized what my role in the book is and said he felt special that his story was in the book. This has given Corey a sense of pride about what I do for a living - help others to achieve their goals.

EP Advice:
If you anticipate a growth spurt, make the necessary changes to support that growth whether it is acquiring more equipment, additional staff etc.
