An accountant specializing
in working with the self-employed, Jan Zobel has run her own tax preparation and consultation
business for the past 20 years. She is an enrolled agent (a tax
professional licensed by the IRS) who has prepared over 6,000
tax returns and has represented numerous tax-payers in audits.
Jan is the author
of Minding Her Own Business: the Self-Employed
Woman's Guide to Taxes and Recordkeeping and
has written extensively on small business taxes for magazines
and newspapers. She is a recipient of the Small Business Administration’s
Accountant Advocate of the Year Award. She is also listed in Who's Who of American
Women and Who's Who in Finance and Industry.
Graduate as well
as undergraduate work in the area of education gave Jan the foundation
for the teaching she currently does. Although her original focus
was on working with elementary school children, she has, for
the last 17 years, been teaching tax and recordkeeeping classes
for self-employed adults. Among the institutions in which she
has taught are the Universities of California, Hawaii, Arizona,
and New Mexico.
Today Jan she
teaches at community colleges and small business development
centers throughout the Western United States. She has offices
in Oakland and San Francisco, where she sees approximately 400
tax clients each year. Most of her clients are small business
owners and the majority are women.
