Working at home definitely has it's challenges and isolation is one of them. I think this decision is one that you may want to carefully consider. What I would do is make a list of the pros and cons of renting the office space - be honest. Your ability to pay the rent is one consideration. Will you bring in more business by increased exposure to others in the industry? Is taking on a second job in order to pay the rent going to work out well for you? Consider also, that your son may be needing additional attention. Things may be difficult for all involved.
Another option to reduce the feeling of isolation is becoming involved in discussion forums. EP has a discussion group for Entrepreneurial Parents at onelist. There are many others out there as well. Perhaps just being able to converse with others in the same situation would be beneficial. I find that it works great for me.
