You aren't alone in this problem. I have found that there is no easy way out. You just have to force yourself to make contacts. Keep asking yourself what frightens you about it, what's the worst thing that could happen. Often your answer isn't anything that you can't handle. Remember that a lot of people are the same way. Possibly even some of the people you may wish to approach. I have found that you just have to dive in and do it. Once you have, it does get easier. It may help to start by phone. That's a little easier than face to face. Have a script ready for your initial contact. I find that if I rehearse what I'm going to say first then I'm not stumbling around for words. After saying your introduction or opening speech a bunch of times, it becomes more familiar to you and not as scary.
