I work as a Human Resources rep at a large international firm. I've seen many resumes and cover letters. Wanna know something? We hardly ever read the cover letter. A strong resume can truly stand on its own. Managers already know the gpa, degree, courses, etc. a candidate has that they are looking for before the first resume
comes in the door. Ahead of a resume is knowing someone who knows someone in HR who can put in a good, strong word for you. I wish I'd known this years ago when I was sending out resumes.
