All I can say is go, go, go! It's great that you found a direct sales company that you like. I read some of the other responses and would like to echo that you will find many reputable companies listed on the Direct Selling Association website as members.
I am a consultant for a direct sales company myself and I am disheartened that this type of business so often gets a bad rap. Particularly the issue of involving your family a friends. For many MLMs, this is how you start your business. But that's just it -- it's a START. It is not meant to force people you know to buy a product or start a business. It is a way for you to meet people you don't know through the people you do know. That is where your future business is. Also, my company does not require its consultants to build a downline, like many MLMs, although it does lead to management opportunities for those who do develop a team.
I have to say, joining a direct sales team is the best decision that I have ever made. Don't let naysayers get in your way.
