A Word from A WAHM

"What Are You Wearing?"

© 1999, by Cheryl Demas

I have received word that my site, WAHM.com, is a finalist for the Sacramento Web Awards! I really am honored to be a finalist, and I'm looking forward to the awards ceremony. But considering my competition, let's just say that I'm not writing an acceptance speech.

We will be going to the ceremony though, which has made me realize that because I promote my site online so much, it's been quite some time since I've promoted my business in the "real world."

I was running down the list of the things that I need to prepare: media kit, business cards, yikes clothes! My current business wear of jeans, T-shirt and bunny slippers wouldn't be appropriate. Maybe my old suit will still be in style maybe it will still fit. I dug it out of the closet, No and No. On to plan B.

So we head to the mall, where I realized that it really has been a long time since I've shopped for business clothes. I picked out a few outfits and tried them on. I can't believe that people are actually wearing these clothes to the office. I was embarrassed in the fitting room, forget about wearing them out in public.

I switched to a less-trendy store and I did finally manage to find something appropriate, but I still have to get used to pantyhose and pumps. One of the greatest benefits of working at home has to be the fact that we can wear comfortable, inexpensive clothes if we want to.

I know there are a lot of moms who still get up and dress each morning as if they're going off to work. They claim that it helps them mentally get in a "work mood." If that works for you, fine. Personally, I prefer to be comfortable. The great thing is, we have a choice.

I don't know, maybe I won't give up my entire home business uniform. If you're looking for me at the awards, I'll be easy to spot I'll be the one wearing bunny slippers.
